Double Festival Sparks New Consumption Trends
Driven by the May 5 Shopping Festival and the Shanghai Cruise Culture and Tourism Festival, business districts in Baoshan hosted a wide array of vibrant themed events under the concept of “A Vibrant Cruise Harbor for the Happy Family Season”. Focusing on family consumption, parent-child interaction, and youth engagement, these events introduced a fresh wave of consumer enthusiasm, creating a lively and dynamic shopping atmosphere throughout the district.
According to a sample survey conducted by the District Business Committee, 14 surveyed businesses recorded a total sales revenue of RMB 260 million during the Labor Day holiday (April 30 to May 5), representing a 12% year-on-year increase, while foot traffic reached 3.234 million visits, up 28% from the same period last year. Notably, catering services generated RMB 4.876 million in revenue, a 40.8% increase year-on-year, and chain supermarkets reached RMB 37.819 million, growing 32.5% over last year.
Ⅰ. Special creative events spark unlimited imagination
In collaboration with nearby tourist attractions, Baoshan’s business districts launched diverse activities—ranging from musical performances and parent-child interactive sessions to trendy sports and cultural fairs—transforming shopping areas into mini urban holiday destinations that stimulated consumption and energized the local business environment.
At Baoshan Riverside, numerous engaging events were rolled out. Shanghai Sea World hosted its “Playfield on the Sea” activity series, with a drone firework show themed “The Monkey King—Uproar in Heaven” on April 30 drawing large crowds and boosting sales. Additional highlights included music concerts, pet sports, skateboarding, open-air films, exotic food festivals, and animationthemed-IP productfairs—offering a vibrant blend of entertainment and shopping experiences that successfully attracted visitors and encouraged spending.
CIMC-Meilan Lake Gemdale Plaza introduced a Labor Day mini-vacation festival for pet lovers, transforming the shopping center into a joyful playground for pets and owners. Activities such as street dancing, creative drawing, and pop-up fairs—along with interactive classes—provided exciting options for family entertainment.
Baoshan Wanda Plaza launched its “May 5 Shopping Festival × Sports Month” campaign, introducing 3v3 basketball tournaments, Zumba sessions, and more, turning the mall into a sports hub. This fusion of retail and fitness not only engaged sports enthusiasts but also brought sports brands into the spotlight, creating new consumption models.
Powerlong Plaza hosted a five-day coffee festival, partnering with brands to offer coffee coupons for shoppers meeting purchase thresholds. Additionally, it featured themed events such as fandom call-outs and character cavalcades, broadening its appeal to diverse consumer groups.
At Baoshan ASE Mall, preliminary rounds of the 11th National Game of Honor of Kings were held, together with showmatches and card game matches. Participants could join various gameplay formats and receive exclusive gifts, drawing crowds of young gamers and boosting both food and entertainment consumption.
Ⅱ. Generous discounts bring unexpected surprises
This year’s May 5 Shopping Festival featured targeted “boutique promotions”. During Labor Day, discounts were offered on clothing, cosmetics, jewelry, leather goods, watches, and eyewear. Paradise Walk Mall launched a special Labor Day campaign with major discounts on gold and cosmetics, including group-purchase Longzhu coupons. Six top brands, including Under Armour, celebrated new store openings, and brands like Chow Tai Fook set up limited-time pop-up shops to stimulate spending. In City Mall marked its 9th anniversary by offering exclusive coupons. Members enjoyed up to 40% off on cosmetics and sportswear with group-purchase coupons. Additional promotions included lucky draws for customers meeting spending thresholds, with prizes like the latest Xiaomi phone. Baoshan ASE Mall launched a limited-time voucher campaign, offering over 25% discounts on clothing and eyewear and nearly 30% off digital devices and gold items. Meanwhile, Baoshan Garden City distributed red envelopes via Douyin livestreams and hosted live music performances by professional singers, creating a festive and immersive shopping experience.
Ⅲ. New stores, products and experiences shape emerging trends
Over the Labor Day holiday, a new wave of businesses, brands, and experiences emerged across Baoshan’s retail, tourism, culture, sports and exhibition sectors.
“Baoshan Youli” (Baoshan gifts) opened a new store at Shanghai Long Beach Tower, offering a curated collection of nearly 200 items across six categories—featuring fashion, creative goods, trendy Chinese-style products, and affordable souvenirs. The store caters to a broad audience including youth, families, and art lovers. One Step Garden launched two new locations in Baoshan—one in Shanghai Long Beach Tower, famous for its sought-after window seats, and another in the tranquil Mine Pit Garden, designed for guests seeking a peaceful holiday retreat.
Dahuahucheng unveiled its first exhibition, “Aowu’s Early Summer Paradise”, while In City Mall hosted the “Youqianren” event series, infusing the holiday with fresh energy and delightful surprises.
