Having treating 1,000 people over 40 days, the center of a designated hospital for COVID-19 treatment in Baoshan was officially closed
On May 25th, with the discharge of the last batch of patients from the designated hospital (Baoshan Luodian Hospital) for the treatment of COVID-19, all eight quarantine wards were declared closed. Over 40 days, a total of 1089 people were treated here. Baoshan Luodian Hospital successfully accomplished its mission to fight COVID-19, with all its medical staff making a concerted effort to prevent and control the pandemic.
Staying true to its original aspiration, the hospital has responded swiftly
After 32 hours of preparation, Baoshan District’s designated hospital for COVID-19 treatment (Luodian Hospital) quickly completed the reconstruction and the rapid transfer of the original patients and divided the hospital into three areas, maximizing the space for more beds. More than 260 medical staff took the initiative to join the battle against the pandemic.
In the early morning of April 16th, the hospital officially started to treat patients with COVID-19. Within 48 hours, all eight wards were filled, treating 402 patients in total. The hospital did not reject any patient that should be accepted.
With kindness, the medical staff treated the patients professionally and attentively
To fully guarantee that patients receive timely, effective, adequate, and standardized treatment, Luodian Hospital set up a joint office of medical, nursing, and hospitalization. It selected 17 experts in respiratory, critical care, cardiovascular, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, traditional Chinese medicine, clinical pharmacy, nutrition, and other specialties to form a consultation team and released the work system and process as a designated hospital, providing all-round guarantee for the clinical medical team to treat COVID-19 patients. During the diagnosis and treatment, the medical staff paid attention to the role of TCM, and doctors prescribed medicine based on bedside consultation, tongue diagnosis, pulse taking, etc., to achieve “individualized treatment”.
The designated hospital carried out 18 online and offline multidisciplinary joint consultations and treated 60% of patients with TCM herbal soup, shortening the average hospitalization period as much as possible, achieving a good effect with the integration of TCM and western medicine treatment, and guarding the life and health of every patient with doctors’ kindness.
Under the leadership of the Joint Nursing Department of Shanghai Designated Hospitals, the hospital’s nursing department timely revised the nursing management system, workflow, and nursing routine and conducted training and supervision accordingly.
In order to take better care of every patient, the wards fully implemented responsibility care, and gave specialized care such as PICC, maintenance of infusion port, and appropriate technology of traditional Chinese medicine. The medical staff treated 67% of the patients with ventilation in a prone position. Among the patients admitted, the oldest is 101 years old, and the youngest is only 9 days old. Besides treating patients, nurses also took care of daily life such as feeding, sleeping, and changing diapers.
Most patients were anxious, nervous, or fearful, and nurses spent plenty of time giving relief and guidance every day. For patients with mental retardation, mental illness, severe hearing impairment, etc., the nursing staff took various measures to offer care to meet their reasonable needs to the greatest extent.
To guarantee the safety, the hospital carried out a meticulous work
According to the specific requirements of designated hospitals, the Department of Infection Management has continuously optimized the area for taking off personal protective coveralls and equipment in infectious disease wards through field investigation and repeated deduction and won praise from experts of the national supervision team for its reasonable process and good ventilation. They trained doctors, nurses, security guards, workers, and maintenance personnel in multiple batches of sensory control and built the first defense front according to the principle of “one-to-one assessment”. They were on duty 24 hours a day. Through on-site supervision, remote video monitoring, and irregular sampling, they supervised the taking off of the personal protective equipment of off-duty personnel in real-time to discover problems, correct them in time, and ensure that all requirements for sensory control were put in place. It is their initial intention and mission to protect the safety of every team member.
Hardness was not rare, but the medical staff faced and fought it with no fear.
As one of the 46 designated hospitals for COVID-19 treatment in Shanghai, Luodian Hospital has successfully completed its task and immediately carried out terminal disinfection according to the national health and pandemic prevention requirements. To meet the needs of nearby residents, the hospital will fully resume regular medical services in early June.
The times never stop posing difficulties, but the medical nursing staff is never fearful, fighting the pandemic with the kindness and respect for life in their word and deed.
