Can idle mansions in rural areas come to a new life? Can suburban villagers’ arenas not be separated with “rural flavor”? With the completion of the Tianping Village Zhongwen Space in Luodian Town, Baoshan, all these have had a surprising answer. In the little building of the Jiangnan water-and-ink style, reading, writing, painting and learning intangible cultural heritage have become a new way of leisure for Tianping villagers.

Attractive “Chinese style” little building featured by intangible cultural heritage space

The Zhongwen Space in Tianping Village is at a courtyard beside the Village Committee. There is a hexagonal pavilion and some fitness equipment in this big courtyard, where villagers can take exercise or have a rest. On the other side of the courtyard, a residential-like building of the Jiangnan style is very eye-catching. It is of traditional Chinese style with black tiles and white walls and its side wall is painted with a water-and-ink painting of Tianping Village. Four golden characters “Zhong Wen Kong Jian” on door head shows its identity.

It was noticed that the some 100m2 space has been divided into three sections -- the Painting and Calligraphy, the Good Neighborliness and the Intangible Cultural Heritage. At the Painting and Calligraphy Section at the entrance, villagers can wield with their writing brush and exhibit their work there, or they can get a book from the bookshelf neighboring the lattice window and enjoy reading.

The Good Neighborliness Section suits for people sitting around a table to have a chat or play cards, good for drawing close neighborly relations.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage Section on the other side is the feature of Zhongwen Space. It mainly displays the intangible cultural heritage works in Luodian, such as dragon-boat model, colored lantern and recipe products.

It is introduced that the Luodian dragon-boat rowing tradition is one of the national intangible cultural items and the dragon-boat making techniques have assembled various essential skills. The Luodian colored lanterns are hung on jubilant festivals and the 15th day of the first month of lunar year is the high time for hanging colored lanterns. Luodian people have all tasted the recipe products of Gongdajiang and the producing skills have been handed down from generation to generation. Therefore, villagers are very familiar with these down-to-earth intangible cultural heritage items and would like to take the intangible cultural heritage classes there.

An idle mansion into Zhongwen Space to deliver classes favored by villagers

Tianping Village Party Chief said that the Zhongwen Space is near to the Village Committee and villagers can take a walk there by the way of handling affairs at the Village Committee. Previously, it was the home of the former Party Chief of Tianping village, but is vacant now. Tianping Village reclaimed the old houses in 2018 during the construction of a “Beautiful Village” and this mansion was one of the reclaimed houses. The former Party Chief replaced it with another homestead and left it to the village.

To effectively supplement the public cultural service space, Baoshan has started to create the public space in the village, making an overall design and function renovation on this old mansion and changing it into the Zhongwen Space for all villagers, thus adding splendor to the “Beautiful Village” construction.

Managing the Zhongwen Space requires personnel. Tianping Village Party Chief introduced that the Village Committee has engaged the first group of some 30 Party volunteers as managing personnel to take turns on duty. Many of them have moved to the new buildings in the Luodian Daju Community during the relocation, but they are willing to do something for fellow villagers there.

At present, the Zhongwen Space is open for 2 or 3 times a week. Villagers can read, chat and play cards there and the newspaper reading activity will be held every month. Villagers believe that this place will bring more convenience for villagers to gather together. “The volunteers know what villagers think about. In the eyes of villagers, the volunteers are more close to them than village officials and have more right of speech. So, villagers are willing to tell volunteers about their appalling”, said the Party Chief.

It was learnt that the volunteers will collect villagers’ demand and reflect to the Village Committee, which will arrange relevant courses accordingly. Luodian Town will deliver classes on intangible cultural heritage to villagers according to their hobbies, such as making colored lanterns and dragon-boats, allowing them to enjoy the pleasure of intangible cultural heritage crafts.
