Tech-Driven Charity Event Celebrates China Charity Day at Baoshan Riverside
On September 5, Baoshan hosted a groundbreaking charity event in celebration of China Charity Day, blending innovation with philanthropy. Themed “Charity at the Baoshan Riverside, Love Sharing Through Technology Empowerment,” the event brought together participants from Yanghang, Wusong, Youyi, and Songnan towns and subdistricts, alongside charity representatives from local enterprises and party members. As the autumn breeze gently swept through, attendees enjoyed a warm and unique experience, where technology played a central role in fostering compassion and connection.
The event was organized by the Baoshan District Representative Office of the Shanghai Charity Foundation, in collaboration with the Disabled Persons Federation of Yanghang Town, the Yanghang Town Social Organization Service Center, and the Shanghai Green Dragonfly Service Center for Youth Charity Development. The venue was coordinated by the Social Work Office of Yanghang Town. Focusing on tech-driven philanthropy, the event aimed to provide an innovative and supportive environment for people with disabilities, harnessing the power of technology to enrich their lives.
Inside the event venue, the atmosphere was lively and dynamic, particularly on the fourth floor, where various activities were taking place. In the “Skill-Acquiring” workshops, volunteers led participants through hands-on lessons such as cake making and assembling smart voice players. Attendees eagerly engaged in these activities, gaining new skills and fostering a sense of accomplishment. The “Mental Health Consultation Station” offered a more introspective experience, where professional counselors listened attentively to visitors’ concerns. The “Tree Hole” became a space for people to release stress and share their emotions in a safe environment.
In the interactive experience zone, participants donned VR headsets to immerse themselves in calming music or to engage in simulated fire safety drills. These virtual experiences not only provided valuable knowledge but also created a sense of shared understanding, helping bridge communication gaps among attendees. Another highlight was the “Hand-Held Engine” station, where turning a handle illuminated a light, symbolizing the participants’ newfound hope, resilience, and enthusiasm for life. In the “Blind Box” area, those who had benefited from charitable acts crafted handmade gifts and wrote thank-you cards, giving back their gratitude in a heartfelt way.
“I enjoyed the VR experience the most because it was so informative and interactive,” said one participant with disabilities. “It helped me build the courage to leave my home and connect with others. I feel so happy today!”
An on-site party member expressed admiration: “I am deeply moved by the resilience and hope shown by the people with disabilities here. I feel inspired to become a volunteer and help those in need.”
A representative from the Shanghai Green Dragonfly Service Center for Youth Charity Development reflected on the event’s impact, stating, “This initiative not only merges technology with philanthropy in an innovative way, but it also directly addresses the needs of vulnerable groups. By providing tangible help, we are grounding the spirit of charity in reality while raising awareness about the capabilities and aspirations of marginalized communities.”
The event underscored the transformative potential of technology in promoting social good. It is hoped that the fusion of tech and charity will continue to foster compassion and connection, spreading across Baoshan and beyond, and empowering more individuals to create positive change in their communities.
