Recently, the China Canes Museum, located in the Wisdom Bay Innovation Park in Baoshan District, officially opened its doors to the public. The museum houses a vast collection of rare artifacts, offering the public a platform to explore the rich culture of canes, while also creating a new space for preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture. By harnessing modern technology, the China Canes Museum bridges the past and the future, bringing this cultural symbol to life — an object that may seem ordinary yet holds deep historical and cultural significance. Inside the museum are canes ranging from Confucius-era styles to those from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, as well as canes associated with historical figures and events.

Ms. Wu, a visitor, said, “I didn’t know much about canes before — I just thought of them as tools to help with walking. After visiting the China Canes Museum, I realized that each cane carries a story, and I’ve gained a brand-new understanding of the culture and history behind them.”

Mr. Yang, another visitor, remarked, “I was quite amazed. Since canes aren’t common in our modern daily life, this visit really sparked my interest in history.”

The reporter observed that beyond ordinary canes, there were also functional ones — like the telescope cane from the Dingyuan battleship. Found in its command cabin, this cane doubles as a telescope, allowing the captain to survey the sea — a highly practical tool at the time.

According to museum staff, there are more than 600 cane artifacts on display, covering a wide span of time and cultures, both ancient and modern, from China and abroad. While canes represent gentlemanly elegance in many Western cultures, in China’s 5,000-year-old civilization, they symbolize care for the elderly and the young.
