Introducing Ecological Environment into Architecture to Create a Sci-tech Innovation "Green Valley"
Traditional science and technology parks are often located in the suburbs due to the scarcity and high cost of land in the city center. In addition, problems such as single functionality, homogeneous architectural styles, lack of connectivity between the park and the city, and insufficient green landscapes directly lead to a lack of sense of belonging among young people working and living in sci-tech parks.
MAX Science and Technology Park Shanghai · Meilan Lake, planned and architecturally designed by HATCH Architects, breaks this stereotype by creating a smart sci-tech innovation community that is connected to the surrounding ecological landscape, dynamic and open, and equipped with dining options, apartments, as well as leisure and fitness facilities.
A sci-tech innovation "green valley" integrated into the local landscape

MAX Science and Technology Park is located on the south side of Meilan Lake Road, Luodian Town, Baoshan District. The construction includes areas for corporate headquarters offices, pilot R&D, technology R&D and incubation, and supporting services. It plans to introduce industries such as biomedical R&D, smart health, inspection and testing, and intelligent manufacturing.
Located in Luodian Town, Baoshan District, the base is adjacent to the Meilan Lake Scenic Area, surrounded by water channels. At the same time, on the east side of the base is Hutai Road, a main road in Baoshan, which forms a three-dimensional transportation system with the Shanghai Ring Expressway. Besides, the base is close to Shanghai Metro Line 7. It takes only about 40 minutes to reach Jing'an Temple Station in the city center. The excellent natural conditions and convenient transportation will make the base a new sci-tech innovation landmark in Baoshan District.
Dialogue a between architecture and the surroundings, and landscape extension
Considering the natural environment around the base, during the design process, the HATCH team was committed to extending the landscape of Meilan Lake to MAX Science and Technology Park. With the concept of "sci-tech innovation green valley", the design director of HATCH introduced the ecological environment into the architecture. By creating waterfront open spaces, three-dimensional landscapes, and green setback spaces, an all-round three-dimensional ecological space was formed.
The team first positioned the buildings that carry different functions and integrated the R&D headquarters, the comprehensive sci-tech R&D and conference training center, and the talent dormitories with commercial facilities into the base.
In terms of architectural design, the facade of each individual building is composed of white curved surfaces like "valleys" with undulating peaks, creating a rhythmic and dynamic appearance that breaks the square and rigid style of traditional sci-tech innovation parks.
