“Making robots with robots” is no longer science fiction, but already realized in Shanghai. Located in Shanghai Industrial Park of Robotics in Baoshan District, the third phase project of Shanghai Fanuc Intelligent Factory has successfully achieved “reaching target output at commissioning” since its launch nearly half a year before, and is striving to exceed 10 billion yuan in orders this year. Countless industrial robots will be assembled at this intelligent factory, which will drive the industrial scale and efficiency of Shanghai Industrial Park of Robotics to further growth, support the city’s intelligent manufacturing to improve quality and efficiency, and help accelerate the development of new quality productive forces.

The application density of industrial robots is often regarded as an important index to measure the degree of automation production in a country or region. Utilizing 383 robots per 10,000 people, Shanghai ranks first in this field in China. As the first park named after robots in Shanghai, Shanghai Industrial Park of  Robotics is regarded as an example. Relevant data show that among the 281 enterprises settling here, about 30% are directly related to robots, and most other enterprises are indirectly related to the robotics industry, which is also related to various application scenarios of the robotics industry.

With the rise of new technologies of generative artificial intelligence (AIGC) such as ChatGPT and Sora, the robotics industry is facing the opportunity of upgrading and leapfrog development. How to better integrate AIGC with robot entities, aim at the next “disruptive innovation”, and create a robotics and intelligent manufacturing industry with distinctive features and rising energy levels is a new test for the park.

According to the relevant person in charge of the industrial park, it is necessary to focus on the layout of key links and core components. For example, for the currently hot humanoid robot nowadays, algorithm, vision system, perception system, etc. are all important links in the overall layout. To this end, the park is continuously promoting the establishment of intelligent manufacturing research centers, strengthening technical support, etc., and encouraging enterprises to make breakthroughs in technological innovation and product upgrading on the basis of targeted introduction of “especially talented students” in key sub-sectors. Taking Fanuc as an example, with the best efforts of the park, it cooperates with Shanghai University to complete the project of “Demonstration and Application of Intelligent Workshop for Precision Machining of Passenger Car Parts”, and skillfully uses the scientific research strength of the university to solve the bottleneck problems on the assembly line.

With the opportunity of a new round of planning adjustment, the park has created many new industrial spaces. Combined with the urban village renovation at Xingxing and Tanyang and the “moving industries upstairs” project of Liandong U Valley-Baoshan Robotics Innovation Base, the park is expected to add more than 2.3 million square meters of industrial space, doubling the development space.

Next, the park will focus on typical application scenarios and user needs, select a number of key robot fields with solid foundation, wide application coverage and strong radiation driving effect, establish scenario application “supply library and demand library”, gather core superior resources, and organize and promote the orderly development of “robot +” application actions.
