Baoshan Riverside Undergoes a Dramatic Transformation
Baoshan District, located at the intersection of the Yangtze River, Huangpu River, and Wenzaobang River, is an important hub and waterway gateway in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. It is where the Yangtze River flows into the sea after running for over 6,000 kilometers.

Talking about the changes at Baoshan Riverside, Zhong Peijian, an “old captain” who lives nearby, said with emotion, “In the past, the riverside area of Wusongkou was a steel slag yard, and nobody wanted to visit there. Nowadays, after the environmental improvement, the appearance here has changed dramatically. Everyone likes to go running by the river while enjoying the scenery.” The “environmental improvement” mentioned began with the transformation of Baoshan’s “four olds”. The Wusongkou area of Baoshan, located in the northern extension of Shanghai’s “Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek”, was once a strategic place to guard rivers and seas, and was known as “the gateway of Sanwu” and “the water and land transport hub”. When Baoshan functioned as a base for traditional industries such as steel and freight transportation, many sites in the Riverside served the production and made great contributions to economic development.

Nowadays, Baoshan’s traditional economy is facing transformation, and the old wharf, old yard, old factory buildings, and old port area are undergoing disruptive transformation. After comprehensive and in-depth investigation, Baoshan is promoting the transformation of the “four olds” through innovation, with a focus on ecological restoration and function improvement. Around the cruise port, Baoshan Riverside adjusts and transforms the surrounding shoreline, making it more leisure- and life-centered.
At the same time, promoting the functional transformation of the old terminal and seizing the opportunity of the development focus of the international cruise tourism market shifting eastward, Baoshan will build the ro-ro terminal with a history of more than 20 years into Wusongkou International Cruise Port, serving the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center, forming a new pattern of “Yangshan Port International Logistics in the South and Cruise Port International Passenger Flow in the North”; promoting the transformation of the old yard, Baoshan will transform the steel slag yard with a history of more than 40 years into Wusong Paotaiwan National Wetland Park and National Science Education Base Shanghai Yangtze River Estuary Science and Technology Museum; Shanghai will reinvigorate the old factory building industry, and transform the old factory building of Shanghai No.8 Cotton Textile Factory with a history of 100 years into the cultural and creative park Peninsula 1919, which presently serves as a carrier of cultural and creative innovation; promoting the transformation of the old port area, Baoshan District cooperates with Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd., in order to turn the 14th loading and unloading area of the SIPG, which has served for more than 30 years, into a “young” high-end waterfront commercial and business complex for cruise, cruise and yacht services, and develop commerce and business, culture and entertainment, leisure and life-related activities, etc.
