China’s first domestically built cruise ship, Adora Magic City, bathed in the afternoon sunlight on the first day of 2024, departed from Wusongkou International Cruise Port and set sail for her highly-anticipated maiden voyage. Carrying passengers from different parts of China, this cruise marks a new landmark in China’s cruise ship development as the country achieves a delivery from blueprint to reality after 8 years of scientific research and 5 years of design and construction. The Chinese people now have a chance to tour around the world on a domestically-made cruise ship where they can enjoy themselves in more intimate and familiar surroundings.
Adora Magic City, painted with Dunhuang flying ribbons, stretches 323.6 meters long and 37.2 meters wide, has a gross weight of 135,500 tonnes, and can accommodate up to 5,246 passengers. This voyage is a 7-day and 6-night trip that will take in cities in South Korea and Japan, and at the same time, bring Chinese culture to the world. During the cruise tour on this moving “modern city on the sea”, travelers can enjoy delicacies across the world, watch wonderful performances, shop for luxury goods, or just stand on the deck to watch the sunrise and sunset, listen to seabirds singing, and feel the sea breeze blowing... Today, cruise tours are becoming a new fashion of travel. Tourists on board Adora Magic City—ranging from toddlers to white-haired elderlies, from family travelers to friends traveling together—are full of pride and curiosity about the trip on the country’s first large cruise ship. “China is now the fifth country that can build a large cruise ship. I’m proud of made-in-China things and proud that our country is strong,” said passenger Mr. Chen from Fuzhou, who took his children to feel the charm of the domestic cruise ship. A cruise trip is not only a way of travel, but also a way of life. For the elderly, a cruise trip means an easier way of traveling around as they can eat, sleep, and play in a single place. Passenger Ms. Jin, who came from Suzhou with her parents, said that the cruise is suitable for her family travel as her parents are getting old and traveling on a cruise could show them a different way of life without tiring them that much with inland tours. She also mentioned that she has never been on a cruise and is full of expectations for the first experience that she will have in the coming seven days and six nights.
As the first home port of the first domestic large cruise ship, Wusongkou International Cruise Port was officially opened in 2011, and made its remarkable achievement in becoming the top port in Asia within three years and the fourth largest cruise home port in the world in five years. It is an important infrastructure in Shanghai’s efforts to develop its cruise economy, accelerate the pace of building itself into a cruise city, and promote the development of China’s coastal cruise industry. The Binjiang Committee of Baoshan District said that with the full return of international cruise ships to the port and the establishment of the state-owned cruise operator—Huaxia International Cruise Co., Ltd. in Baoshan, Baoshan will take this opportunity to develop its cruise operation services, expand related support facilities and functions, and stimulate leisure consumption. In doing so, Baoshan will be fully geared towards building a new pattern of high-quality development of the cruise economy featuring the coordinated development of ship (cruise operating company and brand), port (the largest cruise home port in Asia) and resort (Shanghai International Cruise Tourism Resort).
