Recently, Innovation and Living - 2023 Baoshan Cherry Blossom Festival for Scientific Innovation (one of the activities of 2023 Shanghai Cherry Blossom Festival) sponsored by Baoshan District Science and Technology Commission (Association) kicked off in Gucun Park.

“Science Young” aims to empower children to ask questions and learn better.

There are fun popular science activities such as “Back to Jurassic in One Second” and “Flying over the Oriental Bird World”, as well as the first offline meeting of “science ambassadors” from Science Young, an activity for popular science in Baoshan, with children. On the road lined with cherry blossoms, hundreds of children met the popular science masters. With many questions in mind, the children and the science masters started a journey to explore the world of AI.

“Will AI replace humans?” This lovely voice and serious question came from the microphone of a student of Baoshan Foreign Language School affiliated to Shanghai University, and the person in charge of Metaverse and Virtual-Real Interaction Research Institute answered the question. “A profession requiring strong human emotions will still be very competitive in the future. Besides, AI can’t replace researcher now either.”

Another student from the same school raised their hand and asked, “Human invented robots, but why are robots smarter than human?” “Just like we created cars, why do cars run faster than people?” Postdoctoral fellow and deputy secretary-general of Shanghai Association for Artificial Intelligence gave a simple and easy-to-understand example in life to make children understand. “It is because human beings are not running fast enough, and we want to run faster, so we created such tools to help us.”

Through the interaction of “question and answer”, children’s ability to ask questions was well trained and they also gained joy and wisdom. The host of a science program of SMG Oriental Broadcasting Center encouraged the children, “If you have learned how to ask questions, in the future, when you want to solve a problem, you will know which methods you can take, which is a very important competitive edge in an era of ‘strong artificial intelligence’ and a high-quality learning method.”

Based on the evaluation criterion of “fun for children”, “exploration and innovation” and “asking the most questions”, 6 children were awarded the title of “2023 Curious Teenager”, the badge of “Science Young” and the popular science book Artificial Intelligence.

Blending technology and arts: Embracing innovation and savoring the urban life.

Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher of Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor of Fudan University and senior reporter of Xinmin Evening News, writer of the art review column “Lin says”, winner of Shanghai Changjiang News Award, and professor of School of Fine Arts of Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts shared their opinions about innovation, urban life, science and technology and art from their respective professional perspectives.

The transformation of Baoshan District from a steel hub to an innovation hub is closely related to the contributions and efforts of many innovative enterprises and excellent universities. At the event, the director of the Science and Technology Development Center of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and the vice chairman of Baoshan District Association for Science and Technology presented the “Baoshan Cup Excellent Organization Award for Universities” to the award-winners.

As representatives of science and technology enterprises in Baoshan, Shanghai Qingbao Engine Robot Co., Ltd. and Sushui Energy Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., introduced the talents and stories related to scientific innovation.

Baoshan Science and Technology Policy Service Desk, Zhangjiang Park Innovation Exhibition Area, University Science Park Exhibition Area and Technology and Finance Exhibition Area Science and Technology Fair were also set up at the site. Science and technology enterprises and institutions were invited to promote Baoshan’a innovation policies and display its innovation elements, so that citizens can see the achievements and feel the vibrant innovation atmosphere.
