The only wildlife conservation base in Baoshan District locates in Oriental Bird World of Gucun Park. Without any mesh or cages, over 60 kinds of birds, cultured or wild, live here freely.

On May 8th, five baby black swans hatched, becoming the only birds hatched naturally during the pandemic lockdown.

On June 8th, these five babies were one month old and were officially introduced to visitors.

Three of them are basking in the sunshine when Liu Mingjie, the technician in Oriental Bird World, explains to children visiting the little swans: “Black swan used to be a national second-class protected animal. Nowadays, with the breeding technology improved constantly, black swans are no longer endangered.”

After a thorough physical examination that ensures those swans are in good condition and do no harm to humans, the technician gives kids chances to clean and wash them themselves.

Fan Ziyan, a five-year-old girl, feels so excited because it is the first time she takes a closer look at the baby black swans, and she says in a baby’s voice: “I hope they can grow up happily.”

These five baby black swans are very precious. After incubation, three in poor health have to be raised by humans at the incubation center, and their parents raise the other two.

Following the technician to the lakeside, we can see the two stronger baby swans swimming and predating behind their parents. With the increasing temperature, the three swans on artificial cultivation will become stronger and join them too.
