Baoshan Memorial Park of Revolutionary Martyrs

Baoshan Memorial Park is located at No. 599, Baoyang Road, Baoshan District, Shanghai.

In May 1949, the Shanghai Liberation Campaign broke out and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) fought a fierce battle in Baoshan for half a month under the guidance of the strategy of "taking Wusong by assault to facilitate the liberation of Shanghai". In March 1956, "Baoshan County Martyr Cemetery" was built in memory of revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Shanghai. It was rebuilt and renamed "Baoshan Martyr Cemetery" in 1976, and further renamed "Baoshan Memorial Park of Revolutionary Martyrs" in December 1987. It is recognized as a key martyrs memorial building under municipal-level protection (municipal-level cemetery) in Shanghai. It was repaired in 1999 and Baoshan Martyrs Memorial Hall was established inside the park. The park was comprehensively renovated and expanded from 2004 to 2006, resulting in the establishment of Shanghai Liberation Memorial Hall and the reconstructed "Baoshan Martyrs Memorial Hall".

The cemetery is located at northwest corner of the park. In the center of the cemetery stands a 16m high monument with the inscriptions of the commander Chen Yi which read "The Revolutionary Martyrs Are Immortal". In the north of the monument, visitors will see the “Symbol of Imperishable Righteous Ardor--Wall of Names of Martyrs Who Sacrificed Their Lives for the Liberation of Shanghai” where names of over 8,000 martyrs (including more than 300 natives of Baoshan) who heroically gave up their lives for the liberation of Shanghai are inscribed.

Monument of Yuepu Battle in Shanghai Campaign, Yuepu Park

Monument of Yuepu Battle in Shanghai Campaign, located in the east corner of Yuepu Park, witnessed its grand opening ceremony on May 27, 2002.

The south-facing monument symbolizes the strong determination of the commanders and soldiers who boldly drove on into Shanghai and the firm faith in liberation of China. On the front of the 1.7m high pedestal are inscriptions by the general Chi Haotian, the former member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Vice Chairmen of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC), State Councilor and Defense Minister.

The monument itself is 5.15m high, marking the date of liberation (May 15, 1949) of Yuepu Town. The height of the monument and the flower bed under it is 5.27m in total, representing the date of liberation (May 27, 1949) of Shanghai. The main body of the monument consists of statues of two irate solders with red flags and guns in their hands, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of numerous commanders and soldiers fighting fearlessly for the liberation of Shanghai. Beside the soldiers are the ruins of the fortifications that have been taken, which symbolizes the arduousness and hardship of the Yuepu Battle where heavy casualties were incurred. Behind the monument stand the evergreen pines and cypresses, representing the eternity and immortality of patriotism of revolutionary martyrs.

Yuepu Township People's Government began the renovation of the monument in March, 2020, and the job was finished prior to September 30, 2020. Now the Monument of Yuepu Battle in Shanghai Campaign is open to the public with a brand-new look and connotations unique to the new era.
