The upper channel has been the problem of the berthing and departing water. With the depth of only about 6 meters, the berthing and departing wharf has a limited rotary space. If the master sails the ship slightly carelessly, the ship will easily run aground. When the dredging is over, the water depth will be increased to about 11 meters, which will facilitate the berthing of large international cruise ships and improve the punctuality and safety of cruise ships. After the dredging, the Cruise Terminal will offer more convenient conditions for 3 or 4 ships, according to the cruise port patrol law enforcer of the Baoshan Marine Bureau.

The dredging operation needs 40 days. As the junction for the high-speed passenger ships at Baoshan harbor basin that run between Chongming and urban Shanghai and the ships at Wusongkou, the upper channel has various types of ships with a large shipping flow. The Baoshan Maritime Bureau holds coordination meetings to study the security measures, inspects the dredged vessels on the spot to ensure that the vessels are adequately manned and in good condition, and strengthens cruise and traffic command by means of electronic cruises and patrol boats to ensure safe and orderly dredging operations.
