Shanghai Yangtai Experimental School (with the Nine-year School System)

I. School Profile

Shanghai Yangtai Experimental School was founded in September 1998 and restructured to a nine-year school in July 2010. The school is in the west of Baoshan District and can be reached by Metro Line 1.

Covering a floor area of 37,333 square meters, the school has pleasant campus environment and complete facilities. It has physics, chemistry, biology, and science laboratories, library, reading room, psychology activity room, multi-functional hall, studio room, dancing room, and special classrooms for art, music, and labor and technical education class. The school is also equipped with complete sports facilities including an indoor gymnasium that can hold 600 people, a three-story table tennis training hall, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and a playground with a 300-meter synthetic racetrack. These facilities meet diversified study demand of teachers and students and provide supports for the sustainable development of the school.  

The school is a large public school and has 65 classes, 195 teachers, and over 2700 students in two campuses at present. It has four academic leaders, 14 teaching experts, 14 members of the Seed Program, and three tutors of the Qin Lan Project at the district level, 37 backbone teachers at the school level, and 10 former backbone teachers at the district level or higher level. Currently, three teachers have been awarded first and second prize in the Teaching Evaluation of Young and Middle-aged Teachers in Shanghai. Three teachers’ courses have been awarded “One Teacher and One Excellent Class” at the municipal and ministry level. Six teaching and research groups have been honored “Excellent and Outstanding Teaching and Research Group of Baoshan District”. The school adopts the concept of “goal-oriented and focusing on skill improvement, advanced training, teaching practice, backbone teacher development, and evaluation on teachers” in teacher management, which helps make teachers into famous ones of morality and skills.

The school advocates “Golden Globe Culture” in the operation and has realized leap-forward development in teaching quality. Excellent graduates from the school have been enrolled by senior high schools at the district and municipality level. It is a great school for people living nearby.

III. Features of Golden Globe

1. Sports and Education Integration: Shanghai Yangtai Experimental School cooperates with Shanghai Caoyanhua Ping Pong Training School and is honored “Shanghai School for Traditional Chinese Sports Event” and “Shanghai Advanced School of Sports and Education Integration”. The school adopts the sports and education philosophy of “sharing resources, jointly operating the school and developing talents, and realizing win-win cooperation”, integrates “Golden Globe Culture” and “passing on the spirit of Ping Pong”, and transforms the “sports and education combination” to “sports and education integration”, developing many student athletes who are healthy, positive, and excellent in character and learning.

At present, the experimental school has formulated a talent cultivation and transfer system that integrates “first-level professional training, second-level improvement training, and third-level elementary training” and has become a model school of “sports and education integration” in Shanghai and even across the country. The experimental school and Ping Pong training school have successively cultivated and transferred eight excellent athletes including Xu Xin, Shang Kun, Peng Feilong, and Yang Yiyun to the national Ping Pong Team and over 20 athletes to Shanghai Ping Pong Team and Ping Pong teams in other provinces and municipalities. The school had one Olympic champion, 61 champions of international competitions such as World Table Tennis Championships and Table Tennis World Cup, 43 champions of national competitions, and 436 champions of Shanghai municipal competitions.

Yangtai Experimental School and Caoyanhua Ping Pong Training School have teamed up to compete in the Shanghai Games on behalf of Baoshan District and ranked in the first place in terms of the number of golden medal and medal and total score since 2002.

2. Features in Other Fields: Apart from the leading Ping Pong skills, the school has also developed in other fields including sports, arts, and science and technology. Currently, the school chairs and joins in the alliances including Shanghai Athletics Federation, Shanghai Dance Alliance, Baoshan School Alliance of Table Tennis, Baoshan School Choral Community, Baoshan School Calligraphy Community, Baoshan School Dance Community, Baoshan Radio Science Innovation Union, Baoshan Brain Olympic Innovation Education Federation, and Baoshan School Fencing Alliance. It provides various featured trainings for students to develop interests and exert their talents.

IV. Golden Globe Program

1. Program Components: “4+1” project: Golden Globe Sunshine Student Cultivation Project, Golden Globe Curriculum Reform Practice Project, Golden Globe Teacher Image Building Project, Golden Globe Education Ecology Construction Project, and Golden Globe Featured Cultural Education Project.

2. Program Research: “Teaching-Quality-Oriented Activity Themed with ‘Spirit’”, a selected program in the Baoshan Supporting Plan of Morality Development

3. Discipline Alliance: The school will become a discipline base of the Teaching Cooperation Alliance of Teaching and Research Office of Shanghai Education Commission, Intern Teacher Standardized Training Base in Baoshan District, Research Unit of Topic on Kindergarten and Primary School Transition in Baoshan District, Pilot School of STEM Education in Baoshan District, and Pilot School of Digital Textbook Application in Baoshan District.

4. Curriculum: The School strictly implements the Curriculum Plan for Primary and Middle Schools in Shanghai and has built a personalized “Golden Globe” Curriculum Framework.

The basic curriculum consists courses in the field of arts and humanities, nature and science, life and technology and will be delivered via eight personalized projects including teaching design and optimization, classroom teaching reform, school-based assignment research and development, schoolwork quality follow-up, improvement of ability in making out questions, comprehensive quality evaluation, alliance and community practice, and caring one-stop volunteer project to improve teaching quality from all perspectives.

The extended curriculum consists of independently selected curriculum and definite curriculum. The independently selected curriculum involves six fields including discipline extension, Chinese humane manners, diversified talents and skills, sports games, natural science, and international culture and delivered in the form of interest clubs. The definite curriculum consists of discipline extension, featured extension, and themed extension. All the extended curriculum is designed to develop primary and middle school students who meet the minimum requirement in learning and have special skills. The extended curriculum includes over 60 courses. Teachers can apply for teaching courses and students select courses themselves. These courses help students develop personality and specialty.

The research curriculum is delivered via disciplinary theme research, interest club activity, Golden Globe Theme Festival, practice base activity, and holiday activity.

5. Assessment on Moral Education

Based on the assessment system of “one regulation and three stars”, moral education office of the school launches various theme activities such as Six Golden Globe Festivals, Happy Activity Day, Be Master in My House, and Create Warm Class to make students carry forward the philosophy of Golden Globe Culture and select “Star of Golden Globe”, winners of “Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal”, and “Top 10 Star Student”.

The school has been honors “Shanghai Demonstration School of Code of Conduct” for years. It has strict class disciplines and lively atmosphere in the classrooms and holds various effective moral educational activities. It is also a model school that encourages personal development and is full of vitality.
