Shanghai Xingzhi High School is the successor of the former Yucai School established in Chongqing in 1939 by the prominent educator Mr. Tao Xingzhi, who also served as the first principal. In 1978, Xingzhi School was nominated by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Education as one of the city’s 26 key middle schools. In 2005, it was recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education as an Experimental Model High School among the first group of 28 schools. The school currently has 27 classes, 1186 students, and 136 faculty members. As an experimental model high school, it excels in teaching expertise, facilities and performance.

Committed to Yucai’s tradition, we have been blazing new trails. We follow The school motto set by Mr. Tao Xingzhi, “Toward Truth and Genuineness”, and prioritize “the unity of knowing and acting, and extending knowledge for creativity”. We are committed to cultivating young minds, sending graduates to prestigious universities at home and abroad. In recent years, some Chinese universities piloted enrollment based on comprehensive evaluation results and basic subject tests. We thus stepped up training for gifted students, continuously boosting the number of students admitted to Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University and Jiao Tong University. The school has gained visibility, as shown by the special coverage on mainstream media, including Wenhui Daily and Shanghai Education TV.

    Our efforts eventually bore fruit. 80 years in the making, the former Yucai School has evolved into a renowned school in Shanghai—Xingzhi School. Following the footsteps of first principal Mr. Tao Xingzhi, we work to “fill the world with love”. Among us, there are two professor-level teachers, four special-designation teachers, three teachers holding doctoral degrees, 36 teachers holding master’s degrees, six chief teachers of Baoshan District, twelve discipline pacesetters, and 16 core teachers nominated as candidates for master teachers in the fourth round of “master principals and teachers” training program. The school also leads subject teaching in Baoshan District with seven research teams and seven subject bases, covering Chinese, Mathematics and English.

We also instill the values of Xingzhi in the young generation. Mr. Tao Xingzhi’s educational philosophy and propositions have been guiding The school forward. A teaching model has been formed, with which we value the pursuit “Toward Truth and Genuineness”, “uphold the spirit of Mr. Tao Xingzhi ”, nurture “genuine emotions, conduct and competency”, and implement ethical education with “incremental curricula, diversified methods, interconnected channels and standardized management”. Over the years, we have been practicing “Education for Genuineness” in everything we do. Our teaching reforms have also been in line with Mr. Tao Xingzhi’s idea of “Life Education”. In advocating “Education for Genuineness”, “inquisitive, interactive and instructor-led lessons with students taking the initiative”, “New Xingzhi” efficient lessons, and other new teaching ideas, we have elevated our teaching.

We encourage knowing through acting, and aim for innovation. The school offers over 100 courses in six categories, namely scientific and technological innovation, liberal arts, science, art, sports and career. Supported by Shanghai’s top-notch universities such as Fudan University, Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, and East China Normal University, we have set up twelve Tao Xingzhi “Life Education” labs for robotics, drones, fabrication, engineering structure, estuarine and coastal research, woodblock print, reading club, geography and astronomy, etc., which greatly boosted personalized learning and all-around performance.

    We recognize the value of international programs. Our China-Australia class provides systemic development paths for the students, and The school exchanges academic visits with famous high schools in France, Germany, the US, the UK, and other countries. We try to nurture global vision, so that our students could act locally, and think globally.

    The school’s attraction is evidenced by the huge number of applying students. An eclectic list of elective courses provides platforms for students of different interests to learn and explore. Annual events like science fair, art festival, sports games and soccer matches immerse teachers and students in a rich school culture. From drama, astronomy, psychology, basketball, folk music to woodblock print, student clubs enrich extra-curriculum activities.

Our longstanding efforts have been rewarded. The school has received honorary titles in successive years, including “Campus of Civility in Shanghai”, “National Leader in Learning from Tao Xingzhi”, “Rule-by-Law Model School of Shanghai”, “Shanghai’s Leader in Ethical Education”, “Shanghai’s Model School in Student Conduct”. Our students have won awards in major contests for young students, such as the national writing contest, national contest for smart robots, Shanghai “Golden Key” science contest, etc. Striding briskly into a brand new future, this experimental model high school is on its way to be “preeminent in Shanghai and prominent in China”.
