Yuepu gongs and drums can be dated back to a long time ago. Legend has it that at the end of the Qing Dynasty, there was a scholar in Yuepu area who became an official in the capital. Beloved by the people, he received an eight-sided drum from the people as a gift. When the scholar returned home with glory, he tied colored silk embroidered with the image of eight immortals, namely Zhang Guolao, Han Zhongli, Lan Caihe, Tieguai Li and other, on the rim of the eight-sided drum, and caused a sensation. This kind of "Paired Drums with Eight Immortals" became popular in Yuepu Town, Luodian, Luonan, and Jiangwan in Baoshan District, Shanghai.

Since the reform and opening up, the "Paired Drums with Eight Immortals" has integrated characteristics of well-known drums from Shanxi province, Taiyuan city, Sichuan province and the eastern Zhejiang province, giving birth to "Yuepu gongs and drums", a new type. The playing band has also expanded and made its way successfully onto stage with a number of excellent tracks.
