■Location

Located in the northern part of Shanghai, Baoshan District borders the Yangtze River in the northeast, Huangpu River in the east, Yangpu District, Hongkou District, Jing’an District and Putuo District in the south, Jiading District in the west, and Taicang City, Jiangsu Province in the northwest. The Wenzao River runs through the central part of Baoshan from west to east, which is crossed by many bridges, including Wusong Bridge, Jiangyang Road Bridge, Wenchuan Road Bridge, Kangning Road Bridge, and Hutai Road Bridge. Baoshan District covers an area of 365.3 square kilometers, with a land area of 302.3 square kilometers and an administrative area of 299.15 square kilometers.

■Administrative Division

By the end of 2020, Baoshan District had had jurisdiction over 3 sub-districts including Youyi Road, Wusong and Zhangmiao and 9 towns including Yanghang, Yuepu, Luojing, Luodian, Gucun, Dachang, Miaohang, Songnan and Gaojing. Under the sub-districts and towns, there had been 103 villagers’ committees and 406 residents’ committees.

■Household Registered Population

By the end of 2021, Baoshan had registered 406,244 households in total, up by 7,115 from the previous year, recording a growth rate of 1.8%; its registered population had increased by 27,445 to 1,055,637, a growth of 2.7% from the previous year. In 2021, the newly-born population in Baoshan was 4,618, recording a birth rate of 4.43‰; the number of deaths was 9,318, recording a death rate of 8.94‰; the natural population growth rate was -4.51‰. The number of permanent residents in Baoshan stood at 2,397,782. In 2021, the number of marriage registrations was 5,305, down by 3% from 2020; the number of divorce registrations was 1,987, down by 44.9% from 2020. The majority of the household registered population in Baoshan is Han Chinese. Apart from Han Chinese, Baoshan also had 43,641 permanent residents from 51 ethnic minorities, including 18,440 household registered residents from 49 ethnic minorities, who live in towns and sub-districts across Baoshan.
