■Location

Baoshan District, located in the northern part of Shanghai, is bordered by the Yangtze River to the northeast and the Huangpu River to the east. It shares boundaries with Yangpu District, Hongkou District, Jing’an District, and Putuo District to the south, Jiading District to the west, and Taicang City in Jiangsu Province to the northwest. The Wenzao River flows through the central part of Baoshan from west to east, spanned by several bridges, including Wusong Bridge, Jiangyang Road Bridge, Wenchuan Road Bridge, Kangning Road Bridge, Hutai Road Bridge, and Qilianshan Road Bridge. Baoshan District covers a total area of 365.3 square kilometers, of which 302.3 square kilometers is land. The administrative area is 299.19 square kilometers.

■Administrative Division

By the end of 2023, Baoshan District governed 3 sub-districts—Youyi Road, Wusong, and Zhangmiao—and 9 towns, namely Yanghang, Yuepu, Luojing, Luodian, Gucun, Dachang, Miaohang, Songnan, and Gaojing. These sub-districts and towns were further divided into 103 village’s committees and 469 residents’ committees.

■Household Registered Population

By the end of 2023, Baoshan District had a permanent resident population of 2.2659 million, a decrease of 6,000 compared to the previous year. The registered household population was 1.090432 million, an increase of 18,231 compared to the previous year. In terms of gender, 50.1% of the registered population were male and 49.9% were female. By age group, 12.5% were aged 0-17 years, a decrease of 0.7 percentage points; 12.7% were aged 18-34, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points; 35.4% were aged 35-59, an increase of 1.5 percentage points; and 39.4% were aged 60 and above, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points. Throughout the year, there were 4,395 births, resulting in a birth rate of 4.03‰; and 13,014 deaths, with a mortality rate of 11.93‰, leading to a natural population growth rate of -7.9‰. In 2023, the life expectancy in Baoshan District was 81.99 years, with males at 79.31 years and females at 85.01 years. During the year, 4,969 couples legally registered for marriage, an increase of 23.79% percentage points compared to the previous year, while 2,350 couples registered for divorce, an increase of 39.30 percentage points. The registered household population in the district was predominantly Han, with a total of 38,704 permanent residents from ethnic minorities, representing 52 different ethnic groups. Of these, 18,401 were registered minority residents from 47 ethnic groups. Ethnic minorities are scattered across all towns and streets of Baoshan District.
